I hate LA. The monotonous neighborhoods, the crappy food, the traffic all combine to make this town a dreaded destination for me. But yesterday I found something, something good. Since I was onsite with a customer, I offered to take him to lunch. As we mulled local options, a co-worker suggested a place called the "Oinkster." The customer was lukewarm about it since he'd only been there once, but I was intrigued, so we went.

As we pulled up, I saw a road sign with a three words that sealed the deal, "slow fast food." Once inside I ordered the special, a Oinkster Pastrami with Gruyere cheese, caramelized onion and red cabbage slaw. It was served alongside Belgian style fries with a garlic mayo dipping sauce. That was a damn fine lunch. Now all I have to do is find 8 equally fantastic meals before the week is over.

I don't speak of my father very much mostly because there isn't much I can talk about, especially with my children. I haven't spoken with him in over 15 years and with my girls, lets just say that my job is to protect them. So the subject of my father is never initiated by me.
But Elder was asking about uncles and aunts and the relationships between sisters and brothers and how that eventually plays into aunts and uncles. So after we exhausted my brother and sisters and Ubies bother and sisters, we got on to my uncles and aunts. I explained how my father had only one brother. And how he died when I was little. I got a bit teary eyed. The man has been dead for 30 years, but he treated me so well and always was so loving to me. I still get a bit emotional thinking about him playing guitar for me or buying me an erector set on Maxwell street. To this day I always read the comic page backwards because i saw him do it once.
In addition to his death, visiting his apartment where he killed himself so soon after they found his body, remain today as influences on my life.
If i do nothing else, i will consider my life well spent if my girls think of me fondly as a good daddy. Is that too much to ask?

How Bush may have saved the free world

I'm still trying to reason this all out. I'm not a passionate debator, yet the implications are staggering and either heartwarming or heart chilling depending which side of the political fence you sit on. The 9/11 attacks were ultimately unsuccessful. That is, they were designed to draw focus to the objectives of al Qaeda, yet the sheer horror of those attacks instead blinded us to any objective discussion about what those objectives were.

And Bin Laden has some pretty clear policy objectives, which can all be bolied down to this, end U.S. influence in the Middle East;

End U.S. support of Israel
Force American troops out of the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia
End the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan and (subsequently) Iraq
End U.S. support of other countries' anti-Muslim policies
End U.S. pressure on Arab oil companies to keep prices low
End U.S. support for "illegitimate" (i.e. moderate) Arab governments, like Pakistan

But the rhetoric coming from the Bush whitehouse was that al Qaeda wanted to end the U.S. way of life. That Bin Laden was a monster and not a man trying to acheive a set of objectives (even with objectionable means.) That our swift vengance and actions in Afghanistan and (subsequently) Iraq, that our loss of civil liberties, that our loss of freedom are necessary to combat the evil-doers.

If instead Bush had tried to lessen our position in the Middle east, that would have met al Qaeda's objectives, and indeed the terrorists would've won.

Younger & I have a personality conflict

We are VERY similiar. We're both Aries and our birthday's are 5 days apart. We are stubborn to a fault. We are passionate.

Milfy and Elder were out for the evening, so I thought it might be a good time to have a heart to heart with younger about our constant fighting. I tried to explain the four year old the reason why we argue so much, and to asure her that I'd always love her even though we may disagreee. That even though we'd argue, I wanted her to understand that I still loved her.

Her response was direct "That's what tickles are for Daddy."

Indeed.

The first was because the younger didn't like the idea of steering and so she just stood on the gas while driving into a tree. The second was because the elder stopped in the middle of the jogging path to change the radio station. Yes it has a real radio, complete with a fake CD player playing horrendous Euro-Techno.
Me : "Sweetie, can you move the truck now?"
Her : "I'm trying to find good music!"
Me : "Honey, people are trying to run here."
Her : "I need to find the right music!"
Me : "Then we need to find a different truck."

I did wedding photography for 8-9 years about 20 years ago. It is often dirty, sweaty, exhausting work that is not always appreciated. There was a lot to not like about the job. Many 14 hour shifts included scarfing McDonalds in the car between the wedding and the reception because not every couple feeds you. Or working Friday afternoon thru late Sunday evening in a tuxedo on hot summer weekends. It was good money, but I didn't have a passion for it. But what really drove me away was that it was not rewarding enough to make up for the dichotomy between another day on the job for me, and a lifetime milestone for the clients.

Thankfully some photographers can get over that, as evidenced by my brothers wedding. The photog's name was Michael, & he geeked out with me early on, as I confessed my previous career to him. When someone gets passionate about their job, it's easy, and he was passionate. I won't go into all the gory details about the wedding, but above is the traditional ring shot. Well maybe not quite that traditional.

But a small percentage of these users were much better than the rest. By grouping these superstars together, Picks Pals was able to go 5-0 against the spread last week.

The matronly Jamaican woman very politely asked the driver what time they'd be in Milwaukee. "9:40" he said and she repeated into her cell. After discussion in what sounded vaguely like english into her cell, she asked the driver, who had just pulled away from the curb and was piloting this behemoth betwixt cabs and cars, beneath the underpass at the airport, "would you please speak with my sister?"
"Sure. I just gotta radio in here." very heavy wisconsin accent (picture Norm the husband in Fargo.)
He uses the radio and then takes the cell to give this woman's sister directions from her house to the pick up spot at Mitchell Airfield.

This behavior, those accents, that interaction is me, home, the midwest. And I realize, I don't need to open my eyes to see where I am, I just need to open myself a bit and enjoy the moment, no matter how banal.

The not unpleasant whine the trains make on the BART system in San Francisco.
The cacophony of sirens and horns and yelling that is Manhattan (and is not in any way the same as a bunch of people trying intentionally to make noise.)
The lingering scent of Chocolate mingled with fresh water that can be had on certain Chicago afternoons.

Maybe it's just small comfort to a guy whose primary skill set relies on sight, but closing your eyes and being somewhere is way better than complaining about where you're not.

I also realize I over-romanticize the closer to home I get.

Rather than buckling, they've decided to stand by their decision. So the right wing nutcases held a press conference condeming the "cultural sewage." Jason Vine, the Chrysler Vp of communication, responded back with "It is also important to remember that the American consumer has the ability to turn on or off TV shows, as do PTC members."

Worst travel day ever

I once worked 51 hours straight. Several times I've done more than 36, so why does airline travel suck so much life out of me?

3:40am - Wake up. Dreams of past and present employers. Think about going back to sleep. Not gonna happen
3:58am - Turn on TV to lull myself
4:28am - Realize that I'm not gonna fall back asleep, and start packing. Since I forgot to pack pants for this trip, I'm reduced to either shivering in the over airconditioned plane, or wear same Walmart pants from yesterday.
4:29am - Put on pants
4:48am - Realize in car on way to airport that Starbucks doesn't open until 5:30. Fuel up rental and pass on the gas station coffee. Mistake.
6:15am - Hope to catch the 6:40 flight, too late so I get stand by for the 7:40 and confirmed on the 9:40. Grab a smoke 5 hours earlier than I normally do. Good idea.
7:40am - plane full.
8:00am - I'm #2 on the stand-by list.
8:20am - Ticketed. Gate Agent apologizes that it's not a great seat, but I don't care, it's only a 2 hour flight.
8:40am - All aboard, but we're not going anywhere.
9:10am - Captian comes on and explains that they're having hydraulic issues. "Since it affects the taking off, flying and landing part of this flight, we need to get it checked out."
9:45am - Apology
10:30am - Apology about the lack of air
11:00am - Single serve cups of water are doled out. It's 95 here in Dallas and the plane is every bit as hot inside.
11:30am - status quo
11:45am - aploogies
12:30pm - disembark plane for alternate plane at different gate
12:38pm - board lovely Dallas train (they cringe if you say tram.)
1:12pm - board plane #2
1:32PM - All aboard, here we go finally.
1:47pm - Maintence crew arrives on board. This is not a good sign.
2:12pm - Captain explains that this planbe also is having techincal difficulties.
2:13pm - collective groan from all passengers.
2:38pm - Captain steps out of cockpit, gets on intercom and looking the passengersin the face explains that the altimeter is having issues and as much as it pains him (and he did look stressed,) he will not fly this plane with these mechanivcal problems.
2:45pm - leave plane # 2 and go back to the gate where original flight was at. Yes the same plane.
3:15pm - all passengers finally recieve meal vouchers. Whoopee.
3:42pm - board plane #3 or #1 depending on how your scoring.
4:10pm - Flight attendant gets on intercom and explains that if we're not airborne by 4:30, they will be in violation of their hours and will have to change out the crew.
4:18pm - everybody is in their seats, and all luggage is stowed.
4:26pm - airborne

4:37pm - PIlot gets on intercom and explains that since you can see Oklahoma off the left side of the plane, we are indeed on our way to Chicago.
6:30pm - touchdown
7:40pm - home

now all I have to do is get up at 4am for my flight tomorrow.

I'm not a world traveler. I don't have several hundred-thousand miles to spend at will. What I do have is a sense of humor and a limited amount of patience.

Friday afternoon getting back from NY to ORD is always a royal pain in the ass. First you have the shift change amongst cabbies starting at 4..., pm..., on a Friday..., in New York Fucking City. City that never sleeps, my ass. You cannot catch a cab after 4pm on the island. They might not actually sleep, but cat naps are frequent and un-opportune.
Second is the whole "second-city bullshit" I never see as many folks on stand by as I do on a Friday afternoon trying to leave LGA or JFK for ORD. SFO - room, LA - room, DFW - room, ORD - wait in line. They might group us with the fly-over states, but every motherfucker is trying to get to Chicago tonight. Seriously, 75 people on stand by. I'm gonna start my own subversive campaign to offset the bad rap New Yorkers have about being rude. I think they might just have a bad start to most days and this carries through their day. If you walked out of your house and had to endure the garbage on the street, horns honking and congestion, your mood might be a bit dark too.

I watched a white woman stop and pick up an empty bag of chips that somebody had left on the stairs down into the subway. I thought this was a bit odd, but very nice of her. I ran into her on the other-side of the turnstiles after she had tossed the bag away.
I told her "You'll have good Karma today."
"Why?" she asked
"Because you threw away that garbage which somebody else might've slipped on."
She smiled in thanks

When I got to Union Square and walked up the stairs, I watched a big black guy slip (on a plastic bag,) and catch himself just before he fell.
"Are you alright?" I asked knowing full well I might get a New York response for my efforts.
Instead he smiled and laughed. "I'm ok."
"The rest of your Friday is going to be perfect now that you got that out of your way."
He continued laughing as we walked in separate directions.

First reported by Sysm, the continuing story of the abonimal Doctor's secret escape has taken a turn for the worse. Seems that instead of landing in the predesignated area, he instead has ended up in a tear in the time space fabric. Show below is the arrival picture taken with the two matriarchs of the island. The second picture is after a quick jet lag induced nap. Yes those are the same two ladies. And you may notice that they have glued the Dr's eyes shut before sprinkling benzene all over him.
Whatever your opinion of him might be, that surely is an awful way to go.

The idea does hold tremendous appeal though. People wonder why men are portrayed as immature, selfish dicks. I think a lot of that might have to do with the constant emasculation that men undergo on a regular basis. We're often encouraged to be little boys instead of men. Well, maybe at least tempted. I don't physically fight to provide for my family. Hell I don't even sweat. Maybe my body chemistry is overdue for some of that fight or flight response that is sorely lacking from my day to day life.

I'd like to be a part of a fight club. I'd enjoy the camaraderie with other men in similar social positions as me. I'd even proudly wear the marks of an ass beating. Except my wife won't let me.

I have a very long day tomorrow. Client wants me to be on site early in Milwaukee. Since it's a 2 hour drive, and the day before a holiday weekend, I thought I'd take the train. I told him I could be there @ 10:30 am. He balked at my showing up "late" so instead I'll be on the 6am train to Milwaukee, which means I need to leave my house @ 4:45 am. I'm not a morning person, but SYSM made me feel better.

the graphic arts industry, is the low entry level. I started working the third shift for $7 per hour in early 91. Now I'm an industry consultant able to support my family of four. And I assure you that I'm not unique.

I think that kids from poor neighboorhoods have an excellent opportunity in this field, given the proper exposure early on in life.

SYSM and others have recently linked back to "Donor's Choose." This is a great idea and I wish to plug a particular cause that is trying to expose city kids to digital photography. I was lucky enough to be the first contributor and for everyone who posts here, I'll kick in another $25 to match your contribution.
