Leander Kahney's impressive display of Journalism

He raises an interesting question, but by not supporting his arguments with facts, he's just another biased wanker.

Bill Gates is painted as a benevolent, generous man. This is the same man who wallowed in his billions for years before deciding to give some of it back. Not to say he isn't doing good things now, just that this sounds familiar.

Rockefeller's name conjours up the image of a giant Christmas tree in NY, or a university, or the charitable foundation that underwrites a lot of public television. Time has faded the Robber Baron image, and the ruthless tactics he used to gain power.

But the tactic worked for Rockfeller, and it seems to be working for Gates. Only time will tell.

Personally, I don't find Gates to be worthy of the demonizing. He was in the right place at the right time. And he both developed and bought some good, emerging technologies.

Apple bought, and (ahem) borrowed others tech along the way. And they continue to do so.

And, mind you, after Apple's own software, more people run Microsoft applications on the Mac than any other brand.

Big doesn't necessarily mean evil. And Microsoft has never come close to the evil perpetrated by the energy and financial industries.

Gates is doing well. He announced several years ago that he planned to use most of his fortune for philanthropy. A applaud the decisions he's made. He's spent better than most goverments.

    He deserves credit and respect.

Steve Jobs isn't a superhero. He's a businessman. And the (poorly written) piece was trying to point that out. People buy into the branding to a degree that they accept that whole "us vs. them" bullshit.

"Us" are not, and have never been, part of the equation. It has always been, and will always be, "Them."

So, I give Kahney credit for asking people to rethink their pictures of these two men. And maybe a better writer will come along to do a better version.
